Most models provide an inspection slot in the top of the caliper for checking the pad thickness after the front wheels are removed. However, if the thickness seems marginal, the pads should be removed from the caliper and checked. Models not having an inspection slot will require pad removal to check the thickness of the friction material.
The front disc brake pads are equipped with wear indicators that ride above the surface of the rotor. When the brake wears to its minimum thickness, the wear indicator is allowed to contact the rotor's surface, making a squealing or chirping noise while driving.
