DRAIN AND REFILL

Pickups and MPV

These models use a removable carrier axle which has a drain and fill plug.

  1. Jack the front and/or rear of the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  2. Position a suitable container under the axle drain plug. Remove the fill plug to provide a vent.
  3. Remove the drain plug and allow the lubricant to drain out.

NOTE: Do not confuse the drain and fill plugs. The drain lug is magnetic to attract fine particles of metal which are inevitably present.

  4. Clean the magnetic drain plug.
  5. Install the drain plug.
  6. Fill the rear axle with the specified amount and type of fluid. Install the filler plug.
  7. Lower the truck to the ground and drive the truck, checking for leaks after the fluid is warm.

Fig. 1: Be careful not to lose the fill plug washer, however, inspect the condition of the washer and replace it if necessary

Fig. 2: Using a 24 mm socket, loosen the differential housing fluid drain plug

Fig. 3: Remove the differential drain plug and allow the fluid to drain in an approved container

Fig. 4: Be careful not to lose the differential drain plug washer, inspect and replace if necessary

Fig. 5: Most differential drain plugs have a small magnet in the center to catch any small metallic fragments in the fluid

Fig. 6: Always inspect the air vent tube or cap (located on the top of the differential housing) for obstructions and clean if necessary
