LEVEL CHECK

Fig. 1: Location of the drain and fill plugs on the rear differential case

Fig. 2: Wipe the area clean around the differential oil fill plug before opening to prevent any dirt from entering

The drive axle fluid level is checked from underneath the truck.

  1. Clean the dirt and grease away from the area of the filler (top) plug.
  2. Remove the filler plug. The lubricant level should be even with the bottom of the filler plug hole.
  3. If lubricant is required, use only the specified type. It will probably have to be pumped in through the filler hole. Hypoid SAE 90 lubricant usually does not pour very well.

NOTE: On Navajo models with the front locking differential, add 2 oz. of friction modifier Ford part No. EST-M2C118-A. On Navajo models with the rear locking differential, use only locking differential fluid Ford part No. ESP-M2C154-A or its equivalent, and add 4 oz. of friction modifier Ford part No. EST-M2C118-A.

Fig. 3: After loosening the differential oil fill plug using a 24 mm box wrench, remove the plug and allow any excess fluid to drain into a container

Fig. 4: After removing the fill plug, look inside the hole and inspect the fluid level, if it is overfilled, allow it to drain to the correct level

Fig. 5: If the differentail fluid level is not visible, stick your finger into the hole and check to see if the level reaches the bottom level of the filler hole

Fig. 6: Fill the differential housing with the correct amount and type of gear oil until fluid starts to trickle out
