Loosen linkage locknuts so they are both at least 0.039 in. (1mm) away from
the adjustment lever.
Shift the transmission to the P range by moving the manual
shaft of the transmission.
With the link at 90 degrees to the lever, adjust the clearance using a feeler
gauge to 0.039 in. (1mm) between the adjustment lever and the locknut.
Remove the feeler gauge and tighten the jam nut to 69–95 inch lbs.
(8–11 Nm).
Measure the clearance between the guide plate and the guide pin in the P range.
There should be 0.039 in. (1mm) clearance in front of the pin and 0.020 in.
(0.5mm) clearance behind the pin.
Move the gearshift lever to the N and D ranges
and check that the clearance between the guide plate and guide pin is the
same in both ranges. If not, readjust.
Disconnect the negative battery cable to deactivate the shift-lock.
Remove the selector knob and console.
Loosen linkage locknuts and lock bolt.
Shift the transmission manual shaft to the P range.
Push and hold the selector lever forward with a force of approximately 22
lbs., then tighten the lock bolt to 67–95 inch lbs. (8–11 Nm).
Turn the locknut by hand until it just touches the spacer, then tighten
the jam nut to 67–95 inch lbs. (8–11 Nm).
Check the lever so the clearance between the guide plate and the guide pin
in the P range with the pushrod lightly depressed is as specified.
Move the selector lever to the N and D ranges
and make sure there is the same clearance between the guide plate and guide
pin. If not, readjust the lever.
Install the console. Clean and apply locking compound to the selector knob
screw threads and tighten the screws to 13–26 inch lbs. (1.5–2.9
Nm).
Pull the selector lever rearward, toward the driver and insert a 0.197 in.
(5mm) outer diameter pin into the gearshift rod assembly.
Remove the air intake tube.

the driver and insert a 0.197 in. (5mm) outer diameter pin into the
gearshift rod assembly
Loosen the shift lever and the top lever mounting bolts.
Shift the transmission manual shaft to the P range position.
Adjust the clearance between the lower bracket and the shift lever bushing
by sliding the shift lever assembly until there is no clearance.
Tighten the shift lever mounting bolts to 12–17 ft. lbs. (16–23
Nm).
Make sure the detent ball is positioned in the center of the P range
detent. If not, loosen the linkage bolts and turn the bracket to adjust the
position, then retighten the bolts to 61–87 inch lbs. (6.9–9.8
Nm).
Adjust the clearance between the lower bracket and the shift lever bushing
by turning the top lever until there is no clearance. Tighten the top lever
mounting bolt, then retighten the remaining bolt to 12–17 ft. lbs. (16–23
Nm).
Remove the pin from the gear shift rod assembly and install the column covers.
Check selector lever operation.
Raise and safely support the vehicle, as necessary. From inside the vehicle,
place the column shift selector lever in the OD position.
Hang an 8 lb. weight on the selector lever.
From below the vehicle, pull down the lock tab on the shift cable and remove
the fitting from the transmission manual control lever ball stud.
Position the transmission manual control lever in the OD position
by moving the lever all the way rearward and then moving it 3 detents forward.
Connect the cable end fitting to the transmission manual control lever.
Push up on the lock tab to lock the cable in the correctly adjusted position.
Remove the 8 lb. weight from the column shift selector.
After adjustment, check for P engagement. Check the column
shift selector lever in all detent positions with the engine running to ensure
correct adjustment.
