REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

PICKUPS AND MPV
  1. Make sure the parking brake is fully released. Remove the parking brake lever adjusting nut from the forward end of the front cable.
  2. Remove the seat(s) and roll back the front format, as required. On MPV, remove the cable cover. Raise and safely support the vehicle, as necessary.
  3. Disengage the rear cables from the equalizer and remove the spring. Disconnect the front cable from the equalizer.
  4. Remove the bolts from the cable retaining straps and remove the cable.
  5. Install in reverse order. Adjust the parking brake.
NAVAJO
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Back off the equalizer nut and remove the cable end of the intermediate cable from the tension limiter.
  3. Remove the intermediate cable from the bracket and disconnect the intermediate cable from the front cable.
  4. Lower the vehicle. Remove the forward ball end of the parking brake cable from the control assembly clevis.
  5. Remove the cable from the control assembly.
  6. Using a cord attached to the control lever end of the cable, remove the cable from the vehicle pulling it up into the passenger compartment.

    To install:

  7. Install in reverse order. Adjust the parking brake.
Rear
PICKUPS AND MPV
  1. Make sure the parking brake is fully released. Loosen the parking brake lever adjusting nut.
  2. Remove the seat(s) and roll back the front format, as required. On MPV, remove the cable cover.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Disconnect the rear cable from the equalizer.
  4. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly, brake drum and brake shoes. Disconnect the cable from the backing plate.
  5. Remove the bolts from the cable retaining straps and disconnect the spring from the cable. Remove the cable.
  6. Install in reverse order. Adjust the parking brake.
NAVAJO
  1. Release the parking brake control.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the wheel and tire assembly, brake drum and brake shoes.
  3. Remove the locknut on the threaded rod at the equalizer. Disconnect the rear parking brake cable from the equalizer.
  4. Compress the prongs that retain the cable housing to the frame bracket or crossmember and pull out the cable and housing.
  5. Working on the wheel side of the backing plate, compress the prongs on the cable retainer so they can pass through the hole in the brake backing plate.

  6. Lift the cable out of the slot in the parking brake lever, attached to the secondary brake shoe, and remove the cable through the brake backing plate hole.

    To install:

  7. Route the cable through the hole in the backing plate. Insert the cable anchor behind the slot in the parking brake lever. Make sure the cable is securely engaged in the parking brake lever so the cable return spring is holding the cable in the parking brake lever.
  8. Push the retainer through the hole in the backing plate so the retainer prongs engage the backing plate.
  9. Properly route the cable and insert the front of the cable through the frame bracket or crossmember until the prongs expand. Connect the rear cables to the equalizer.
  10. Rotate the equalizer 90°and recouple the threaded rod to the equalizer.
  11. Install the brake shoes, brake drum and wheel and tire assembly. Adjust the rear brakes.
  12. Adjust the parking brake tension using the initial adjustment or the field adjustment procedure, as necessary.
  13. Apply and release the parking brake control several times. Rotate both wheels to make sure the parking brakes are applied and released and not dragging.
