Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the wheel and tire assembly,
brake drum and brake shoes.
Remove the locknut on the threaded rod at the equalizer. Disconnect the
rear parking brake cable from the equalizer.
Compress the prongs that retain the cable housing to the frame bracket or
crossmember and pull out the cable and housing.
Working on the wheel side of the backing plate, compress the prongs on the
cable retainer so they can pass through the hole in the brake backing plate.
Fig. 3: Rear parking brake cable installation
Lift the cable out of the slot in the parking brake lever, attached to the
secondary brake shoe, and remove the cable through the brake backing plate
hole.
To install:
Route the cable through the hole in the backing plate. Insert the cable
anchor behind the slot in the parking brake lever. Make sure the cable is
securely engaged in the parking brake lever so the cable return spring is
holding the cable in the parking brake lever.
Push the retainer through the hole in the backing plate so the retainer
prongs engage the backing plate.
Properly route the cable and insert the front of the cable through the frame
bracket or crossmember until the prongs expand. Connect the rear cables to
the equalizer.
Rotate the equalizer 90°and recouple the threaded rod to the equalizer.
Install the brake shoes, brake drum and wheel and tire assembly. Adjust
the rear brakes.
Adjust the parking brake tension using the initial adjustment or the field
adjustment procedure, as necessary.
Apply and release the parking brake control several times. Rotate both wheels
to make sure the parking brakes are applied and released and not dragging.
