LEVEL CHECK

The level of the power steering fluid should be checked in the reservoir periodically, at least once a year on the B Series Pick-up and Navajo models or at every oil change on MPV models. Fluid is checked using the dipstick which is attached to the reservoir cap. It is recommended that you check the fluid at normal operating temperature (HOT) on B Series Pick-up/Navajo models and after the engine has cooled on MPV models.

WARNING
Extensive driving with a low power steering fluid level can damage the power steering pump.

  1. On B Series Pick-up and Navajo models, perform the following:
    1. Warm the fluid to normal operating temperature by driving for at least one mile, or start the engine and allow it to idle for five minutes.
    2. With the engine idling, turn the steering wheel back-and-forth several times from lock-to-lock, then center the wheels and shut the engine OFF.

  2. Locate the power steering pump reservoir, then remove the cap/dipstick and note the level as indicated by the markings (FULL HOT/FULL COLD — B Series Pick-up and Navajo or FULL/LOW — MPV). To be sure of your reading, put the cap back in position, remove it again and double check the level.

  3. If the level is below the indicator markings, add fluid to bring it up to the proper level (a funnel is usually very helpful). If you are checking the level after running the engine or driving, make sure you add enough fluid to bring it to the FULL or FULL HOT range, but like most automotive fluids, DO NOT overfill.
  4. When you are finished, install the dipstick and be sure it is secure.
