Disarming The System
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
  3. Wait one minute. This time is required for the back-up power supply in the air bag diagnostic monitor to completely drain.

Fig. 2: Disengage the air bag module connector located behind the glove compartment cover

  4. If disarming the driver side air bag, remove the lower steering column cover, then disengage the orange and blue clock spring connector. If disarming the passenger side air bag (if equipped), remove the glove compartment cover and disengage the air bag module connector.
  5. The air bag system is now disarmed.

If you are disarming the system with the intent of testing the system, do not! The SRS is a sensitive, complex system and should only be tested or serviced by a qualified automotive technician. Also, specific tools are needed for SRS testing.

Arming The System
  1. If equipped, plug in the passenger side air bag module connector, then install the glove compartment cover.
  2. Plug in the orange and blue clock spring connector, then install the lower steering column cover.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
  4. Stand outside the vehicle and carefully turn the ignition to the ON position. Be sure that no part of your body is in front of the driver or passenger side air bag module, to prevent injury in case of an accidental air bag deployment.

Fig. 3: Check to make sure that the air bag indicator light turns off after approximately 6 seconds

  5. Ensure the air bag indicator light turns off after approximately 6 seconds. If the light does not illuminate at all, does not turn off, or starts to flash, have the system tested by a qualified automotive technician. If the light does turn off after 6 seconds and does not flash, the SRS is working properly.
