REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. If replacing the door with a stripped unit, remove all usable components from the old door.
  2. If removing the rear door (Explorer), remove the scuff plate and center panel trim panel. Remove the upper and lower hinge access cover plate if equipped, and matchmark the hinge-to-body and hinge-to-door location. Support the door either on jackstands or have somebody hold it for you.
  3. Remove the lower hinge-to-door bolts.
  4. Remove the upper hinge-to-door bolts and lift the door off the hinges.
  5. If the hinges are being replaced, remove them from the door pillar.

    To install:

  6. If they were removed, install the hinges in the same position as before removal. Tighten the bolts finger tight.
  7. Position the door on the hinges and install the bolts finger tight.
  8. Install all previously removed hardware to the new door before adjustments are made.
  9. Install the trim panel and scuff plate if they were removed.
  10. Adjust the door and tighten all retaining bolts.
  11. Install the hinge access cover plates.
MPV Models
  1. Matchmark the hinge-to-body and hinge-to-door locations. Support the door either on jackstands or have somebody help hold and support it for you.
  2. Remove the door check bar, by first removing the interior door trim panel and door mounted radio speaker.
  3. Disconnect the electrical wiring harnesses (after disconnecting the negative battery cable).
  4. Remove the door check bar retaining pin.

  5. Matchmark the positioning of the door hinges to the door hinge pillar.
  6. Remove the lower hinge-to-door bolts.
  7. Remove the upper hinge-to-door bolts and lift the door from the vehicle.
  8. If the hinges are being replaced, remove them from the door pillar.
  9. Install the door and hinges with the bolts finger tight.
  10. Adjust the door and tighten the hinge bolts to 16–22 ft. lbs. (22–30 Nm).

    NOTE: If the door being removed is going to be replaced, and its internal components (glass and regulator, latch etc.) are to be used in the replacement door, it may be easier to remove the parts while the door is still mounted on the vehicle.
